Robotics: Search and Rescue Team

Here’s the scenario: Police receive a tip about a bomb threat in a nearby neighborhood. The neighborhood was evacuated, and now it’s time for the bomb squad to investigate. One tool the squad relies on is a robot designed to locate, neutralize, move, and dispose of the bomb.

JV InvenTeams

Students participating in JV InvenTeams learn how to safely use tools and explore new materials to use in hands-on projects. Teams of students practice invention-based design activities and apply their learned skills to create useful and unique projects, including shoe soles and wearable electronics. They build confidence and curiosity around STEM areas including structures, electricity, materials, and robotics. Students develop greater appreciation for the role of invention in improving lives.

Girls Build LA

Girls Build LA is a three-year program designed to reach girls in the LA County public schools. Through the Girls Build LA Challenge, LA area middle and high school girls are designing and implementing community-based solutions that can effect widespread change. Girls Build LA empowers these students to identify the challenges they face and provides them with resources and support to address them.

Scratch

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community.Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.

VEX EDR Competitive Team

VEX Robotics inspires students to become the problem solving heroes of tomorrow. VEX EDR offers students a rich and exciting platform to immerse themselves in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) through the fun of building robots. Educators can bring VEX EDR into the classroom with our custom curriculum or use it as a teaching tool through after-school robotics clubs.

DIY Girls

DIY (“Do-It-Yourself”) Girls’ mission is to increase girls’ interest and success in technology, engineering and making through innovative educational experiences and mentor relationships. We're a supportive community for girls driven by an interest in creating and building with technology. We offer hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) experiences for girls. Girls learn technical skills and apply them by creating their own creative projects and inventions.

Cubes in Space

Cubes in Space™ is the only program in the world to provide students (ages 11-18) with a free opportunity to design experiments to be launched into space on a NASA rocket or balloon! This is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) based global education program, enabling kids to learn about space exploration utilizing innovative problem-solving inquiry-based learning methods. By participating in this program, students and educators are provided with engaging content and activities in preparation for the design and development of an experiment to be integrated into a small cube. This year, successful experiments/cubes will be launched into space via sounding rocket from NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia in late June 2017 or on a high altitude balloon launched from the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility at Fort Sumner, New Mexico in August 2017.

EverFi: Hockey Scholar

EverFi has the capability to design and develop focused courses and Hockey Scholar by the Future Goals Program is the prime example. Whether it’s figuring out the angle of a bank pass, the process of freezing the ice to make the playing surface, or calculating the speed of a slap-shot, students are engaged in learning science and the technical aspects of one of the nation’s most notable sports.

EverFi: Radius

A unique digital STEM education program that uses online gaming and simulations to teach critical math, technology, and coding skills. Radius features 16 modules covering STEM focused topics ranging from the real world application of algebra to basic computer science in a secret agent themed course. Engaging, interactive lessons focus on skill building and highlighting the career possibilities that a STEM education could unlock.
 EDD Website

EDD

Softskills are just as important as technical skills when it comes to preparing our students for the careers ahead of them. At Olive Vista STEAM we bring in the experts, Employment Development Department, to introduce our students to these necessary skills. EDD provides our students specialized workshops that focus on Strong Work Ethic, Positive Attitude, Good, Communication Skills, Time Management Abilities, Problem-Solving Skills, Acting as a Team Player, Self-Confidence, Ability to Accept and Learn from Criticism, Flexibility and Adaptability, and Working Well Under Pressure.

Kids Building Things

Kids Building Things is a collaborative of local engineers, teachers, and tinkerers who provide opportunities to kids and their parents to learn how to use tools and how to build things. We create workshops and activities for kids to get hands on experience with a variety of topics related to science and engineering, to make seemingly complex topics accessible to people of all ages and ability levels. We strive to build the artists and engineers of the future. More specifically, we welcomed this collaborative into the STEAM Magnet this year to facilitate the "Taking Things Apart" Workshop. Each student was able to learn how every day appliances work and become more comfortable with tools through the dis-assembly of a small appliance.
